Concrete as a building material has many advantageous features but also a disadvantageous one which makes it inadequate to be applied as a structural element. This is the slight resistance towards bending-drawing stresses. The aim when we build in high-strength steel wires and strands is to raise the load-bearing of concrete structures significantly by exploiting their advantageous features and enabling concrete to be applied as a structural element. Applying wire and strand in appropriate dimensions and quantity, and by proper statics calculations concrete structures can be used very economically and in a wide range, and can be used in several fields of the building and construction industry.
For the practical application of tensioning steels there are two methods that are wide-spread.
These are:

  • pre-tensioned concrete structures
  • post-tensioned concrete structures
